Cost Reduction and Transport Optimization in Hydrogen Fuel Cells

This course, based on the research presentation delivered by Dr. Quentin Meyer, Senior Research Fellow at UNSW, examines the critical scientific and engineering barriers preventing large-scale commercialization of hydrogen fuel cells.

The material focuses on the transition from platinum-based systems toward iron-based platinum-free catalysts, while analyzing the structural, electrochemical, and transport-related challenges associated with this transition.

Particular attention is given to catalyst degradation, operando electrochemical characterization, proton transport limitations, carbon corrosion, and advanced imaging methodologies combining X-ray tomography, artificial intelligence, and large-scale simulation.

The course explores the complex relationship between catalyst architecture, fuel cell performance, and long-term durability.

What You’ll Learn?

Fuel Cell Fundamentals: The basic mechanics, structure, and operational requirements of hydrogen fuel cells.
Catalyst Economics & Alternatives: The cost barriers of platinum catalysts and the development of low-cost Iron-Nitrogen-Carbon (Fe-N-C) alternatives.
Advanced Diagnostics: How to analyze fuel cell performance using X-ray tomography, impedance spectroscopy, Distribution of Relaxation Times (DRT), and cyclic voltammetry.
Degradation Mechanisms: The root causes of catalyst instability, specifically iron demetallation and carbon corrosion.
AI & Imaging: How artificial intelligence and super-resolution imaging are utilized to model water and gas transport to prevent fuel cell "flooding."
Mitigation Strategies: Practical approaches to improving flow field designs and extending catalyst lifespans.
Commercialization & Markets: The current maturity of fuel cell technology and identifying the most viable commercial sectors (such as heavy-duty trucking and industrial applications).
